Beginners Luck..

Hi, Shaun here… and this is the story of my first shoot all by myself.

Last weekend, Jenn had a pregnancy shoot with a friend of ours (Rachel) but about 2-3 hours before she got a migraine.  She was really going to have to reschedule but did not know where she was going to fit it in before Rachel’s due date (14th).  After seeing her struggle with the idea of shooting with a migraine, I said “well, I could shoot it for you”  and Jenn said “Really??, that would be great!?  Are you sure?”  “Sure” I said and that’s when it hit me… that terror… you know… that adrenaline rush like when you just got pulled over by the cops or when you have that nightmare that you left your kid at home sleeping and went to the grocery store.

You see I have assisted Jenn at weddings and shoots.  It is easy to sit back and shoot when your only responsibility is to get a good shot here and there or to make sure the light is working.  To be in charge of a session when you have spent more time reading about photography then actually shooting is TERRIFYING!

Once I got the camera in my hand it was sink or swim and (Thankfully) with the help of Sarah (Jenn and Rachel’s best friend), patience from Rachel and Darren, some great natural light and a bit of good luck…. I swam.

Now the only thing left is the pics….

So, I was told that Rachel has only gained 21lbs in her entire pregnancy… I think I gained more than that watching Jenn be pregnant. She is all Belly!

Darren is an excited dad to be.

The one above and the one below are my personal fav’s of Rachel alone.  The natural light was perfect peeking just over the top of the barns.

Rachel is very dedicated to yoga and wanted some pics with her performing some poses.  For the strobist’s out there.. the natural light died down so I tried bring Rachel out of the background using a bare SB-800 to add some hard light to this striking pose.

Another Yoga pose…used a shoot through umbrella to add some directional light while underexposing the background.

Thanks again to Rachel and Darren letting me shoot your pregnancy session and I hope you enjoy the pics.

A couple of Photography related things

Hi everyone.. Shaun here. I am writing a quick post to update some information related to upcoming events, specials and the rest of this year.

First and foremost, The PHOTO WALK is on Saturday! I don’t know if anyone is planning on joining Jennifer and I in New Haven, but if you do, then you will just be hanging out with me. Jennifer had something come up and she will not be able to attend the walk. If you did sign up and you want to meet up and compare shots, then leave me a comment and I will email you back.

On a very serious note… if you are planning on having a session with Jenn this year, the rush is on. Every year about this time the phone begins to ring a bit more and the emails start to pile up. In the last week, we have begun filling Jenn’s calendar for the remainder of 2009. As you may or may not know, Jenn shuts the business down starting December 1st though January 1st in order to spend the holidays with family. Last year in November we had to turn away customers who were looking for holiday pictures simply because we were all booked up. Don’t let this happen to you. There are still plenty of session openings left before December, but do not wait until November 1st to call!

Lastly, another promotion for you. Become a fan of Jennifer Langdon Photography on Facebook and get $10 off your session fee. Also, for every friend you have on your profile, we will give you an additional dollar (per friend, max of 40) off a 2009 session fee. So.. all in all, you could save up to $50 dollars off a session just by becoming a fan of Jennfer Langdon Photography on Facebook. This will be an excellent way to share your preview images with all of your friends and family!

Beginning of the new updates for 2009.

Shaun Here..

As ‘09′ is fast approaching and Christmas is behind us I realized I have less than a week to accomplish a honey-do list of business updates that have been growing over the past year!! I am a bit panicked, but if you know me then you know I work best under pressure. Improving my procrastination will never be my New Years Resolution!!

Anyway, you will see some changes around here. Just in time for 2009, the template that we use for this blog has been updated to give Jenn more creative control over her blog and allows our readers a smoother experience. This update eliminates about 1/3 of my list…. So now I can move onto the website improvements/updates I promised Jenn!

I guess what I am trying to get at is do not be alarmed if you see things changing a bit around here over the next couple of weeks, every year we like to change it up a bit and some of those changes require a bit of trial and error. I promise it will all be worked out soon. Have a Happy New Year and if you read this, leave a comment regarding a resolution that you will not be making!!

Later,
Shaun

Scott Kelby World Wide Photo Walk: Hartford, CT

Hello again, Shaun here.
On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the Inaugural Scott Kelby Photo Walk in Hartford, CT and let me just tell you I had a GREAT time. I think I could write the longest blog post ever about it, but I will refrain. First of all I would like to thank a few people: Jenn for watching the kids and insisting that, out of the 2 of us, I go to the walk when she is the professional. Scarlet Riley for taking the time to make sure we had a walk in Hartford and picking a great route with LOTS of photo opportunities! Scott Kelby for initiating the idea and making it happen. Lastly, all my fellow Hartford walkers.. I hope I made some new friends!

I originally heard about this on Scott’s blog and I thought it would be fun for Jenn, Taryn (Photog friend of ours), and myself to attend, but in the end I was the only one who could attend. That morning, I readied the equipment, left the house, got some D&D, and headed up to Hartford. Our route started out at the Old State House and moved down Main St., across Gold St. and along the edge of Bushnell park. We headed back to City Steam for Photo Sharing, Discussion and food.

The most interesting part of the walk itself is the fact that there are no true subjects, no assignment… just go out and shoot what looks good to you. This may be great for others but was a bit intimidating to me at first. “I am a scientist, who spends the majority of his time toning images not shooting them. I have no idea where to begin”, I thought. Luckily, a few minutes of looking around… turned into … “OMG, we have been doing this for 90 minutes already and we have not even made it through half of the walk” It is amazing the things you can find to shoot. I enjoyed myself so much that I will be planning some informal walks of my own not too far down the road. Check back here and I will post the plans for a photo walk of my own if you would like to join me. Here are some of my images, I hope you enjoy them.

Jenn loves the door image!!

I shot this with nothing but Black and White in mind.

I love this flag shot, it was my personal favorite from the walk.

This is a fun image, but look at “golden glow” on those buildings!

A bit about Jenn…

Hi everyone, Shaun here. For a while now I have been trying to think of a way for potential clients to get a feel for Jenn as a person. I mean… when you want to hire a photographer, the most important thing is that you like the style and quality of that photographers portfolio but the second most important thing might be your personal interaction with the photographer herself.

Now I can easily brag Jenn up and down for the wonderful photographer, wife, mother and friend that she is. I can go on and on about how all her friends love her and I have never met a person that does not like Jenn. (she is just that kind of person) I could even go on to tell you that she is one of the most caring individuals I have ever met, but you might tell me…. “well, you are her husband, you would say that” … and I would see your point.

Lately, Jenn has been meeting with some couples who are looking for wedding photographers. They liked Jenn’s style of photography but wanted to meet to ask questions and just meet Jenn in person to get an idea of who she is. Well, after one meeting she received a glowing email which really stood out to me and made me realize that this was the perfect example to convey how people who hire Jenn feel about her. The email excerpt is below:

Jenn,
What perfecting timing! I was just going to write you an email to THANK YOU for everything! Enzo and I couldn’t be happier Jenn! You are a wonderful, and talented professional and your work shows just how great you are! Between you and me, its like pulling teeth for Enzo to give compliments and when I walked in the door last night, the first thing I heard from his mouth was “Wow Michele, is Jenn great or what? We are so lucky we have her!” I almost dropped to the floor, trust me, that is a huge compliment coming from Enzo!

Now keep in mind, Jenn has not even taken any pictures for this couple yet. So when you’re wondering what type of photographer you want to hire, you might want to consider if you would like a friend to take your pictures…
